Description
Transform your living space into a dazzling spectacle reminiscent of Times Square with our 16 x 32 RGB LED matrix panel. Originally designed for creating dynamic video walls, these panels are ubiquitous in New York City, adorning the sides of buses and bus stops with captivating animations and video snippets. Enchanted by their allure, we procured a selection of these panels directly from the manufacturer.
Each panel boasts 512 vibrant RGB LEDs arranged in a 16x32 grid on its front surface. On the reverse side, a printed circuit board (PCB) hosts two IDC connectors—one for input and the other for output—allowing for daisy-chaining if desired. Additionally, the board incorporates 12 16-bit latches, facilitating display control at a 1:8 scan rate.
NOTE: Cannot be daisy- chained with currently available Arduino libraries
RAM and processing power are crucial considerations when utilizing these displays. Designed for operation with FPGA or similarly high-speed processors, they lack built-in PWM control. Instead, screen updates must be performed continuously to achieve PWM effects manually.
To buffer the 12-bit color image, approximately 1600 bytes of RAM are necessary. Notably, Arduino UNO (ATmega328) or ATmega32u4 boards lack the requisite RAM capacity; a more capable microcontroller is essential. While technically chainable, the scalability of these displays hinges on the system's RAM and CPU capabilities.
For optimal performance, opt for a microcontroller with ample RAM and processing speed, such as the SAMD21, SAMD51, or ESP32. Conversely, 8-bit microcontrollers may struggle to operate the display effectively, if at all. Fortunately, the display's pre-white balanced configuration ensures uniform illumination, mitigating issues with color tinting.
Given the substantial LED count, sufficient power provision is paramount. A per-panel current draw of up to 4A necessitates a robust power source, such as our 4A regulated 5V adapter. Connection-wise, 13 GPIO pins are required for control, necessitating careful consideration of pin assignments and driver firmware compatibility.
Direct wiring attempts often result in confusion and errors. For a hassle-free experience, we recommend utilizing a dedicated board or adapter, simplifying connection via plug-and-play functionality.
We have a variety of boards that support this display.
To expedite development, our Protomatter library is available for both Arduino and CircuitPython environments, streamlining the utilization of chained matrices.
Please be aware that these panels originate from surplus stock produced for large-scale light boards, hence slight variations in appearance and dimensions may occur between batches. Nevertheless, the fundamental operation, codebase, and tutorials remain consistent across iterations.
